John James Wrathall's Ancestors

In 1999, Derek Wrathall of Skipton (DWrathall(at)Totalise(dot)co(dot)uk) contributed the following about his relationship to John James Wrathall:
I am the Derek Wrathall living near Skipton, mentioned towards the end of your pages on the Wrathalls of Africa. I think I can add to the information on John J. Wrathall's background and I think that I may have established the link between my family, and that of Roy Wrathall, with John.

John J. Wrathall's parents are buried at St. Wilfrid's Church, Halton-on-Lune, a village just to the east of Lancaster. The memorial inscription reads:
"In loving memory of Thomas Wrathall born 23rd June 1884 died 1st December 1949 also his beloved wife Henrietta Wrathall born 25th May 1884 died 15th January 1976".
My aunt, Greta Dickinson (née Wrathall), attended the funeral of Henrietta who had been a lifelong friend. The newspaper report of Henrietta's death states:
"Mrs. Henrietta Wrathall, whose son was sworn in on Wednesday as the new president of Rhodesia, died yesterday at her home, Leighton Close, Slackhead, Beetham. She was 91. Born in Lancaster, she was the widow of the late Thomas Wrathall. They lived at Skerton before moving to Halton. Mrs. Wrathall went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Irene Rogers, in Slackhead six years ago. She maintained an interest in music all her life."
Henrietta's maiden name was Bleasedale and she married Thomas in the 3rd quarter of 1908.

I have a copy of Thomas's birth certificate. His parents were James Wrathall and Emily Bargh Wrathall (née Dickinson). James's occupation is given as Joiner, and their address at the time was West Cottage, Bulk, Lancaster. I also have a copy of the marriage certificate of James to Emily. This took place on 16th May 1878 at Christ Church, Lancaster. James was 29 at the time and his occupation was again, Joiner. His father's name was Thomas Wrathall, described as a Timber Merchant. James's address at the time was 5, Gage St., Lancaster.

In the St. Catherine's House Index there is the birth of a James Wrathall registered in the 1st quarter of 1849 at Settle. In a handwritten list left by my father, Frank Nelson Wrathall (14 May 1901 - 1 Jul 1982), James Wrathall, born 3rd March 1849 was the second born of Thomas Wrathall (16 Nov 1824 - 26 Apr 1894) and his first wife Jane (24 Jan 1824 - 24 Mar 1866). I am sending for a copy of James's birth certificate to confirm the name of his mother, but I am confident that the link with our family is established and hence John James Wrathall's earlier ancestry.

My father always referred to John J. Wrathall as a distant cousin, but in fact Thomas, John's father was his first cousin. My father also inferred that John was a descendant of Thomas's second marriage to a widow, Agnes Procter, but from census information and ages at the time this could not be the case.

Derek Wrathall passed along the results of his further research on the descendants of James Wrathall (b. 1849) of Lancashire :
The marriage certificate for James Wrathall & Emily Bargh Dickinson gives the following information for Emily: The birth certificate for James Wrathall gives: Westhouse is a hamlet just to the north east of Burton-in-Lonsdale and west of Thornton-in-Lonsdale. In the 1851 census for Westhouse, at 22, Westhouse, is recorded: At the time of the census there were 7 Wrathall families resident in Westhouse. In the 1871 census for Burton-in-Lonsdale, at The Joiners Arms, is recorded: In the 1881 census for Bentham, at Thornber House, is recorded: The George above is my grandfather, William George. He is also recorded in the IGI as George. I have many of his joinery tools stamped with his name. Albert Edward became a butcher in Blackburn and I have a photograph of his shop.

In Aug. 2006, David Dickinson (dj.dickinson20(at)ntlworld(dot)com) contributed the following data on the family of Emily Bargh Dickinson (wife of James Wrathall):
I have come across your information about Emily Bargh Dickinson and her family and believe that she is the same Emily Dickinson as I have in my family tree. I have Emily as christened in Preesall Lancashire on 27 February 1850, the daughter of John Dickinson and Emma Bargh.

I have the following information about John and Emma: I am descended from Samuel, who was also a shoemaker at the time of the 1851 census before becoming a Licensed Victualler in West Derby, Liverpool, in 1891. John Dickinson's parents were Richard and Ann, but I do not have any information further back than that. Emma Bargh's parents were Samuel Bargh and Betty, and, again, that is as far back as I have found.

I hope this information is of interest to you. I would be interested in other family details, either going forwards or backwards!
