The Hebden-Wrathall Family

John Hebden , who can be reached at hebden1name(at)btopenworld(dot)com, is researching his connection to London Wrathalls via a marriage to the Hebden family. In Feb. 2002, John sent the following information:
In 1799, William Hebden of Middlesmoor married Sarah Wrathall at St. Margarets, Westminster. Was she from Burnsall or the family at Bentham? They had 4 sons and 4 daughters, and 2 sons emigrated to Australia where descendants still live.

William & Sarah's children: George had 3 sons and no Hebden grandchildren. Robert's male descendants at Rose Bay Sydney and Brisbane area. A daughter of George married Officer [surname unknown] had 11 children. Sydney Wrathall Hebden, son of Robert, was a d.s.p. Sgt in the US Civil War (1861-5).

Wrathall entries (from London Post Office Directories):
The last three entries above are in reference to The Family of William Wrathall (1785 - 1841). See also THE HEBDEN FAMILIES.

In Feb. 2005, a page titled Pigots 1840 - Bexley &C. had these listings from Pigots Trade Directory (1840):
From the British IGI (
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp): The closest I can come to Sarah's probable birthdate is: But this is unlikely, as 31 is too old for her to have an additional 8 children, and if she were a widow with children, her birth surname wasn't Wrathall. Thus, Sarah was probably born in London, and had this woman as an aunt: If the latter was her aunt, then Robert and Eleanour were her grandparents, so one of their sons may have been Sarah's parent. Below is a list of Robert and Eleanour's children from the British IGI:
  1. Sarath WRATHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: F Christening: 16 Mar 1729 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
  2. Dennis WRATHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: M Christening: 31 Jan 1732 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
  3. Sarah WRATHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: F Christening: 16 Sep 1734 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
  4. Ann WRATHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: F Christening: 6 Apr 1740 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
  5. Ann WRATHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: F Christening: 2 Oct 1741 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
  6. Richard WRATHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: M Christening: 3 Apr 1744 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
  7. Elizabeth WRATHHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: F Christening: 24 Mar 1727 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
  8. Eleanor RATHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: F Christening: 14 Aug 1726 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
  9. Mary RATHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: F Christening: 21 Sep 1731 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
  10. Robert RAWTHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: M Christening: 15 May 1736 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
  11. Ann RAWTHALL - International Genealogical Index / BI
Gender: F Christening: 30 Sep 1737 St. Giles Cripplegate, London, England
Unfortunately, the IGI doesn't list spouses for any of the sons, so it's guesswork at this point. One can start by comparing William and Sarah's children's given names to the ones in the above list of Sarah's probable father, aunts and uncles. This would indicate that Sarah's father was probably Robert WRATHALL (RAWTHALL), chr. 15 May 1736, and that Sarah (if named after Robert's older sister) was one of his younger daughters, born when he was about 40 - indicating Sarah was born about 1776.

In Mar. 2002, John Hebden mentioned that, in another branch of Hebden family, Silvester Hebden (baptised Burnsall, Yks., U. K., 1760) married Mary Wrathall in 1785 at Gargrave, Yks., U. K., and that both Silvester and Mary died in 1839, and were buried on Burnsall.

In Jan. 2006, John relayed the sad news that Janet Hebden, who was the author of a website concerning Wrathall[s] of Linton and Thornton-in-Craven, had passed away in 2005.
