JOHN WRATHALL's Funeral

MR JOHN WRATHALL – The death of Mr. John Wrathall, of 9 Jackson Street, Hyde occurred on Thursday the 19th inst. At the age of 51 years. Mr. Wrathall was known by many people of the town, he having, up to his demise, being horsekeeper to Hyde Corporation for 18 years. Deceased also acted as driver for the fire engines, and for the accident ambulance. He was held in very high esteem by his many colleagues. The interment took place on Monday last, at the Borough Cemetery, the Rev. Morgan Davies conducting the services at the home and at the cemetery. The funeral was a very impressive one, the remains of the deceased being conveyed to their last resting place on the fire engine, drawn by four horses, and preceded by the following firemen:- Messrs. Bashford, Clithero, Johnson, Garratt, Butler, Brookes, and Durham. There were also Messrs. M. Potts, George Dodd, Eli Cooper, and Wm. Hughes, carters of the Corporation, acting as bearers; and Messrs W. Smith, A. Higham, John Barnett, A. Woolridge, W. Lee, and Sam Kirby, Mr. Littlewood, and the Rev. Morgan Davies. There were three carriages, containing the chief mourners:- 1st carriage: Mrs. Wrathall (widow), Mr. Frank Wrathall, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Wrathall, Mr. John and Mr. George Wrathall (sons); 2nd carriage: Messrs Stephen and Edward Wrathall, Messrs James and Stephen Wrathall (sons), Mr. and Mrs. Harris (cousins); 3rd carriage: Mr. Broadbent, Mr. Samuel Broadbent, Mr. and Mrs. Haughton, Mrs. Braithwaite, Miss Broadbent, Mrs. Dodd. The cortege was met at the cemetery by Alderman Brooke, Councillors Fawley and Middleton. As a mark of respect the blinds were drawn at every house in the vicinity and hundreds of people witnessed the funeral. A wreath, and globe on marble stand, was sent, bearing the inscription – “A token of respect and deepest sympathy, from his fellow workers.”
