Since Mary, James' future first wife, preceded her family to America and used the same ship, port and month of departure as James had the previous year, this implies that her passage was pre-arranged with James, and that they planned to get married prior to James' departure. It also implies that they met in Lancashire several months prior to his departure.

Maria (younger sister of Mary) is apparently also listed as Mary, and probably came over on the Marshfield in 1854 with her mother Sarah. Robert J Mander of AZ (mailpiler(at)deseretonline(dot)com) has more info on Maria.

The Vessel Marshfield was rigged as a Ship with U.S. Registry. It displaced 999 Tons; the Master was J. Torrey. There were 366 LDS Passengers; the Port of Departure was Liverpool, leaving 4-8-54. The Arrival Port was New Orleans, on 5-29-54, after a passage of 51 days. The company leader was William Taylor. Elder William Taylor reported the Marshfield arriving in New Orleans where they boarded the steamer James Robb and went up the Mississippi to St. Louis.
