Wrathall Vital Records for Victoria (1837 -1984)
In August 2001, Hamish Lonsdale-Wrathall transcribed birth, marriage and death records for Victoria from microfiches in the Geelong Centre. He had this to say about his extraction of this data:
Last month I had an hour to fill between meetings, and I went to the
Geelong Historical Records Centre, which is a part of our Town Hall. Whilst fiddling around
with the microfiche records, I found an abstract of the deaths recorded
in the State of Victoria between 1920 and 1985.
A further visit to the Records
Centre produced a listing of Births, Deaths and
Marriages for the State from 1837 to 1920. Apparently, before 1921 all records were consolidated.
Here is the list of Victoria records transcribed by Hamish, who sent copies of the supporting microfiche documents in Oct. 2001:
- BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA 1837/1888
- Unassisted
Immigration to Victoria, AUSTRALIA 1852 - 1923
- BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA 1889/1901
- BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA 1902/1913
- BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA 1914/1920
- Victoria (Australia) Deaths register, 1921 / 1984
- VICTORIA PLACE NAMES AND ABBREVIATIONS
Hamish continues with his discussion of the Victoria records:
I have
typed what I saw on the original, which is often abbreviated.
I will give photocopies to Derek when he visits in November, to make
sure all is well [Derek Wrathall is planning a tour of the States and Australian in late 2001].
It is interesting to look at the places of Death and Birth. Apart from
the Melbourne suburbs, most are from the goldfields. Clunes, Ballarat,
Smythesdale, etc. have much to do with
mining that followed the discovery of gold in Victoria in the 1850's.
The Records Centre has
a fiche archive from Tasmania, South Australia and N.S.W., which I will
eventually obtain and forward.
I have tried to be very careful with the spelling of names and places,
copying them as seen on the original. Names change slightly,
abbreviations are not consistent, and so on. These aberrations are due to the people that created the record, or recorded it.
