Notes: This family appear in the 1871 census at Lothersdale. William's birthplace is read as Malton above but I read it as Marton in the 1871 census. Marton and Carleton (current spelling) are almost adjoining villages in Craven and I think Marton is much more likely to be correct. Malton is a small town a little inland from the Scarborough area of North Yorkshire. In the 1871 census both William and John are described as clog and patten makers.
