Enclosure Award Records
In Dec. 2005, Derek Wrathall, who can be reached at dwrathall(at)totalise(dot)co(dot)uk, mentioned the following:
...... I found a site called A2A (Access to Archives) and put in the name Wrathall. This produced a list of 26 catalogues and the number of hits, presumably the number of times the name occurs, in each. Of these 13 were at the Norfolk records office and related to the Hare Family, Baronets of Stow Bardolph. From your site I see that these are known and concern Marmaduke Wrathall and his descendants. The rest are scattered about the country, but 2 are at the Northallerton records office and I am hoping to find them ..... when I go to my old boss's coffee and mince pie Christmas gathering.
Derek has provided his transcription of the data referred to by the A2A entries in the North Yorkshire record office, both of which describe enclosure awards:
- Cracoe Enclosure Award 1788 W.R.R.D Map Vol 2/6
I Henry Wrathall of Grassington in the County of York, Gentleman, do swear that I will faithfully, impartially and honestly, according to the best of my skill and judgement, execute the trusts reposed in me as a Commissioner, by virtue of an act of parliament for dividing and inclosing several open ffields and stinted pastures within the Township of Cracoe in the parish of Burnsall in the West Riding of the County of York.
This oath was taken and subscribed to by the said Henry Wrathall at Cracoe aforesaid the twelfth day of April one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven before me, one of the Commissioners named in the said act.

- Thorpe-in-Burnsall Enclosure Award 1793 W.R.R.D Map Vol 4/6
"The Award of Henry Waddington of Crow Nest in the Parish of Clapham in the County of York, Gentleman, Thomas Ingleby of Austwick in the same parish, Gentleman, and William Wrathall of Grassington in the same County ........"
"It was therefore amongst other Things enacted That the said Henry Waddington and Thomas Ingleby, together with Henry Wrathall of Grassington in the said County, Gentleman, who is since deceased, should be and they were hereby appointed Commissioners for ......."
Derek had the following to say about the possible relationship of Henry and William Wrathall mentioned above:
This Henry's death ties in with an entry in the Linton PRs for 25 Jun 1792. I think that William would be his son, as in extracts from the enclosure awards given to Barbara [Derek's wife] many years ago there are three references to "William Wrathall son of Henry Wrathall". However, there is also reference to "William Wrathall son of Lupton Wrathall" so nothing can be guaranteed. Unfortunately I didn't have much time at the record office but I did have a quick look at the enclosure maps for Linton and Thorpe. In Linton in 1793 Anthony Wrathall is named on a number of fields, and in Thorpe William Wrathall has a couple of mentions. The awards are difficult to read on film and the maps vary greatly in detail but trawling through them could perhaps throw up other relationships.
