Wrathall International Links Now, as to the authenticity of this biography of Stephen Wrathall, I would refer the English readers to his known connections in England: Wrathall, Coat Merchant, Westhouse, Cheltenham, Gloucester, with depots at the Twekesbury Road Bridge and the Great Western Railway Station. Harry Wrathall, who represented Gloucester at cricket for many seasons, played with Jessop Braund and others under the captaincy of Dr WC Grace, and was selected to play for all England at the oval against the Australians to fill up a date in Australias itinerary, owing to the postponement of the Coronation of the late King Edward. Prominent NZ Wrathalls Stephens family comprised seven sons and seven daughters, all of whom married and had large families. Today there are in several instances, five generations. As New Zealand is the home of the greatest number of Wrathalls, I will now give a brief summary of the achievements of some of the descendants: MUSICAL Mr E Wrathall was a beautiful bass singer and was in his best days, male soloist in St Matthews Church, Auckland. Mr D Wrathall is Aucklands leading baritone today. He was manager in charge of IYA wireless station, Auckland and then transferred to station 4YA, Dunedin. He is now manager of Scrimageurs, 1YX, Auckland. Miss M Wrathall is organist of St Andrews Church, Mangonui. Miss E Wrathall was renowned contralto and led the choir at St Andrews Church, Mangonui. ARTISTIC Mr S Wrathall was pencil artist in the Sun Newspaper, Auckland and now in The New Zealand Herald employ. He bacame noted as a caracaturist during the M.C.C. teams tour of Australia when bodyline bowling and leg theory was at their heights. He mad Larwood the central figure and sketched eleven well limbed girls in shorts lined up with Jardine and his team mouths open with amazement, gazing not at their beautiful faces, but at the writing below leg theory. Again, in another sketch, he brough Phar Lap back from America and this great horse was seen marching up to the ribbon and biting it to open the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This was a very popular sketch, as both this great horse and the Harbour Bridge had attracted the attention of all Australia. Trevor Wrathall had taken prizes at exhibitions for drawings in competitions open to all the schools throughout the country. The firm of S and d Wrathall Painters are reputed for their beautiful dramatical stage scenery and have done great stage planning for most of the better vaudeville companies of Auckland. PUBLIC SERVICE Mr L Wrathall, at present in the P and T Department in the chief Post Office in Auckland. He is a first class morse operator and was one of the first eight in New Zealand to master the Murray system. Mr N Wrathall at present in the P and T Department, Taumarunui Clerical Division. Has just returned from relieving at the Tongariro National Park under the joint control of the Post and Telegraph and Tourist Department. Mr LM Wrathall of P and T Department, Auckland Clericial Division, now stationed at the Waiuku Post Office. CIVIC Mr R T Wrathall, represented the Mangonui Riding on the Mangonui County Council for twenty six years. He has held the positions of Chairman of Mangonui County Council, Chariman of the County Finance Committee, Chariman Domain Board, Chairman Mangonui Hospital Board and Chairman Mangonui Harbour Board. He has been a member of the following: North Auckland Hospitals Board combined Counties, Bay of Islands Hospital Board and the New Zealand Hospitals Boards Association for three successive elections. On one occasion, he secured a position at the top of the pole held at Wellington when all Hospital Boards were attending the annual conference. He also secured the high honour of being selected as the Official Liberal Candidate for Parliamentary honours in 1922 for the Bay of Islands Seat, under the leadership of the present Prime Minister, the Rt Hon GW Forbes. He is a member of the Distric School Committee and has been for twenty years, eleven of which he was Chairman. He has also held the position for ten years of Secretary of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association for the Mangonui and Whangaroa Counties, and represented the War Funds Council in the disbursement of their monthly allocations to the unemployed ex-servicemen. Mr S Wrathall was a sitting member on the mangonui District Road Board at the time of the abolition of the Roads Districts and the Counties Act was brought into operation. With his colleagues he automatically became one of the first members of the Mangonui County Council, by virtue of the office he had held as member of the defunct Board. Mr W Wrathall was selected to the Mangonui County Council for a term of three years. EDUCATIONAL Lloyd Wrathall had the proud distinction of passing through all standards at the primary school and gaining his certificate of proficiency at the age of twelve years. This took him on to the District High School at Taumarunui, where he obtained a Junior Free Place, also the Junior National Scholarship, which is considered to be one of the hardest examinations after leaving primary school. He was then admitted to the Seddon Memorial Technical College in Auckland where he gained his Senior Free Place also the Public Service Entrance Examination. Altogether, there have been eight Wrathalls who have passed through the New Zealand Colleges and Universities and five have matriculated. SPORT Mr WA Wrathall has represented the County as centre three quarter on the rugby field and has been Captain for many years of the Mangonui Senior Cricket Team. He has played for the County for eight consecutive seasons and was selected to play for the North Auckland Reps against the match with Auckland. He was also chosen to play for the North Island suburban representative team against the South Island Team at Christchurch. This was a great honour as his cricketing career had been confined to county districts and consequently, like Chipperfield in Australia, was never brought under the notice of the selectors who were only concerned about cricket in metropolitan centres. This young sparkling all rounder has to his credit twenty three centuries in county and association fixtures, scoring two centuries in one match on one occasion, 128 in the first innings and 114 in the second. Mr D Wrathall captains the St Heliers Bay Tennis Team and is hard to beat on the court in a singles match. Messrs W and B Wrathall both played for the Carlton Bowling Club and were both chosen to represent Auckland in a tour of New Zealand. Mr B Wrathall won the Arthur Myers Tournament of a gold medal with the winners name engraved and a walking can, also gold mounted and monogrammed. Mr G Wrathall is also a great rugby centre forward with fifteen stone to help him on. He is also a good all rounder on the cricket field with two centuries to his credit in county cricket. He has played for the County team against a touring Auckland team and also for the country when it defended the Harding Shield. Mr Lionel Wrathall was Effersons sparing partner in the hundred yards dash and was often seen under the gaslights on the Auckland racing track pushing New Zealands record breaker home. On three successive seasons he ran a dead heat with Efferson who, however, could beat Wrathall in the seventy five yards as he could get off the mark quicker. Mr Lloyd Wrathall was a good cricketer and while at school was captain of his cricket team for three successive seasons. During that time, his team was never beaten. He also was captain of the football team in his grade. COMMERCIAL Mr W Wrathall is an ex-publican and is present owner of the Old Oak Private Hotel. He is now retired with large landed interests four miles out from Mangonui township. His son, Mr W S Wrathall, proprietor of the Mangonui Meat Supply, manages the estate having a dairy farm on the lowlands and running cattle and sheep on the highlands. Miss P Wrathall for fifteen years has been in one commercial house in the general retail business, and is now forewoman of the drapery department in the leading retail house in Mangonui. Mr R Wrathall was for twenty years in the firm of Evans and Sons. He had sole charge of two of the firms branches and moved up to the position of head bookkeeper at the firms head office at Waipapakauri. Mr R Wrathall of Thames was owner and manager of a large livery and transport business prior to the introduction of motor traffic. 56.
