PREFACE TO VOLUMES 1 AND 2

"THE Registers of the ancient Parish Church of LINTON-IN-CRAVEN are contained in several books, and, as we now have them, date from the year 1562.

" It is evident, however, that the beginning of the first book is missing. Hence, it is just possible, as it is probable, that this Register originally dated from I559, as is the case with those of the two adjoining Parishes.

" The first book (260 pp.) measures II.875 x 7.75 inches, and is bound in old ornamented leather, limp, and with the remains of two clasps.

"In places this book is in a terribly dilapidated condition, which has made it at times a task of no small difficulty to arrive at its contents, and worse, occasionally impossible.

" This book carries the record of Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, etc., down to the year I729.

"At the end of it (243--260 pp.) there are some old documents (Terriers, etc.,) referring to the Church property.

"The second book (242 pp.) Measures 13.5 x 10.25 inches, and is strongly bound in rough leather.

" The entries here (220 pp.) cover the period from 1730 to 1779, but the record of Marriages ends at I754, the remainder being in the third book.

"The last 22 pages of this (second) book contain some old Terriers and other Church memoranda, all more or less interesting to Linton.

" The contents of the third and following books, together with an Index to all, will be issued as a second volume, it being found impossible to compress the whole into one book of ordinary dimensions.

"On behalf of my parishioners and myself, I would here give expression to our indebtedness to "The Yorkshire Parish Register Society" for their kindness in bearing the expense of printing the transcript of these records."
