PREFACE TO VOLUMES 3,4 AND 5

"THIS Volume of the printed copy of the Registers of the Linton Parish Church gives the contents of the three volumes or books of registers numbered II, IV, and V, and brings the records of Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials down to the year 1812.

" Vol. (or book) III measures I5.25 x 10 inches, and is bound in rough leather, and contains 92 pp. of paper, the last 13.75 pages being blank. This is a record of Banns and Marriages (only) during the period 1754-1778. A copy of the Marriage Act of 1753, 26 Geo. II, is bound up with this book.

" Vol. (or book) IV measures I4 x 10.25 inches, and is bound in rough leather, and contains 70 leaves of parchment, 140 pp. Of these, 120 pp. are devoted to entries of Baptisms and Burials from 1779 to 1812: then follow one or two blank pages, and the remainder contain three Terriers of the Glebe lands, etc., dated respectively 4th July, 1781, 30th June, 1786, and 28th June, 1809. On the last page of this book is a quaint and interesting description of the positions of the graves of persons buried within the church at Linton from 1789 to 1803.

" Vol. (or book) V measures I8.5 x 11.5 inches, and is strongly bound in rough leather. It contains about 120 leaves (240 pp.) of paper and is a record of Marriages only, from 1778 to 1812. These entries occupy only the first 35 pp. of the book ( and 3 of these are blank) - the rest are unused.

"All these books (II, IV, and V) are more or less in a good state of preservation, though in places the illiteracy of the scribe (? the parish clerk) occasionally raises a difficulty, and often a smile.

" As promised in the preface to [Volumes I and II], there is here given a complete Index to the whole transcript of these registers (1562 to 1812), which I trust may be of service to those who may have occasion to consult this portion of the records of the ancient parish of Linton."
