William Wrathall of Hobart (1811 - 1892)

In May 2003, Roy Wrathall posted a message from a Tasmanian message board (AUS-Tasmania-L(at)rootsweb(dot)com) from Louis "Lou" Daniels (who can be reached at lvdan(at)ozemail(dot)com(dot)au) regarding a pub in Hobart of which William Wrathall was temporarily a proprietor. Part of the message is excerpted below:
The Blue Bells of Scotland was opened by a patriotic Scot, Alexander McLeod in September 1832. It has been continuously licenced since then, but has changed name after 1880.

In Mar. 2005, the following websites had listings for William Wrathall: In Oct. 2008, Leanne Sosniak [soz1(at)optusnet(dot)com(dot)au] mentioned the following:
I have recently started a family tree for my gggmother who married a Rayner in Tasmania in 1840s. We have been provided a letter by elderly relative which was authored by Elizabeth Wrathall, wife of William Wrathall, sister in law to my gggmother. The letter is dated 1881, and it mentions the exchange of letters and photos.

I'm seeking descendants who may have information relating to my ancestor and who could maybe fill in gaps ...... I would love to be able to track down old photos. Given the time passed, I know that this may not be possible, however who would know that a letter from that era was still in existence.
Anybody with any pertinent photos is encouraged to contact Leanne.

Ann Wrathall of Hobart (1814 - )

In Feb. 2005, Elaine A. Game contributed the following information on Stephen Wrathall's eldest daughter, Ann:
I found the records for Ann Wrathall, married to Hugh Currey (the home where [Ann's father] Stephen was staying when he died). Ann Married Hugh Currey on 1st Aug, 1832 and they had, according to the Tasmanian Archives, 4 children. I have found that their site has a few errors from time to time, like missing members of families ..., so this infomation is only as good as the site. They have the certificates, etc., so most times it's accurate.

Children:

Henry Wrathall of Victoria (1826? - 1883)

In January 2003, Noelene Jackson of Victoria , who can be reached at market(at)ncable(dot)net(dot)au, sent a photo of the gravestone of Henry Wrathall, the 4th son of Stephen Wrathall of Tasmania (1779-1872), and Henry's wife Mary Ann (née Obern) (1834? - 1912?) from the Smythesdale Cemetery. In April 2007, a larger photo was available at the Smythesdale Cemetery website (page may load slowly). Henry and Mary Ann have an entry in Hamish Lonsdale-Wrathall's extraction of BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES IN TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA 1832/1892 . Henry also has an entry (as Hy Wrathall) in Hamish's extraction of BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA 1837/1888 . In May 2005, Rootsweb's Australian Records Database had references to two books containing mentions of Henry and Mary Ann:

Lupton Wrathall of Victoria (1828 -1902)

Also in January 2003, Noelene Jackson contributed an extensive amount of information regarding the line of Lupton Wrathall, the 5th son of Stephen Wrathall of Tasmania (1779 -1872). Noelene mentioned the following about her research:
I am sending you all the info I have on Lupton Wrathall. My sister Elaine Game (see Florence Jane Wrathall below) has already given you some as well. Hope this is of assistance to you.
Click HERE to read Noelene's information on Lupton's descendants.

In Aug. 2005, some public records were available for Lupton Wrathall's family: In Feb. 2008, Edith Blaser, who can be reached at blaske(at)bigpond(dot)com, provided information concerning Lupton Wrathall's first wife, Martha Margaret Clarke/Jackson and Martha's daughter Hannah Eliza Wrathall.

Florence Jane Wrathall of Ballarat (1864 - 1899)

In Jan. 2003, Elaine A Game of Tasmania, who can be reached at regame(at)ozemail(dot)com(dot)au, provided new information about Florence Jane Wrathall (1864 - ), granddaughter of Stephen Wrathall (1779-1872):
I am researching a branch of the Wrathalls, namely Lupton Wrathall, married to Mary Pratt. His daughter, Florence Jane Wrathall, married a Chinese man named William Henry Ah Lyee. Their daughter, Alice Florence Ah Lyee, married Samuel George Jackson, and one of their sons was my father, Joseph Reginald Jackson. I can only go to 1813 with William's parents in Canton, Kuang-Tung, but have got a fair amount on the Wrathalls in Yorkshire going back to a Henry Wrathall, born 1612, son of Henri (no information re birth, parents etc).

Lupton Wrathall was the son of Stephen Wrathall and Mary Ann Walker but I had a feeling that this Lupton is not the one I am looking for and so I was surprised when I found your site by accident. I would be interested in any information regarding our great-great-grandmother, Florence Jane Wrathall. One old family story about her was that her parents stopped her eloping with a sailor, so she told them she would marry the first person past their door, which happened to be William Ah Lyee - not the best way to find a husband!!! I also think that Florence Jane's parents were the licencees of the Mellow Inn Hotel in Ballarat, Victoria.

Lupton seems to be a family name, and I found it in most of the Wrathalls in England. I am currently living in Tasmania and as both sides of the familly originated here, I am having a ball seeking here and seeking there. I am .... really hooked, line and sinker, in the Family tree Search. If I may be of assistance also, please let me know .

I have been spending a lot of time lately on the web and learnt a lot more about our family connections, including the fact that my great-grandmother, Alice Florence Lee (daughter of Florence Jane Wrathall) had 5 other brothers and sisters. I never knew these great aunts and uncles existed, as my parents never spoke about their parents or grandparents, and we were told that they had all died before we were born.
Hamish Lonsdale-Wrathall's transcription of Wrathall birth, marriage and death records for Victoria confirms that Florence Jane was born in 1864 in Ballarat, and married Ah Lyee in 1884. This is also confirmed by Florence Jane's IGI Birth and Marriage Record and her IGI Birth and Death Record .

Richard Wrathall of Victoria (1831? -1908)

In December 2002, Anissa Jones of Sydney contributed new information about the lineage of Richard Wrathall, the 6th and last son of Stephen Wrathall of Tasmania (1779-1872); click HERE to read it.

Henry Wrathall/Rothall (1837 - ?) of South Australia and New Zealand

In Aug. 2003, Helen Nankervis of New South Wales, Australia, who can be reached at nhkn11(at)yahoo(dot)com(dot)au, contributed the following info on Henry Wrathall/Rothall:
Henry Wrathall/Rothall (1837 - ?) was the eldest son of Stephen Wrathall (1812-1896) and Maria Iniatoto (sometimes spelt differently) (1815 - ?). When Henry was in Australia he married Ellen Sanger, but the Wedding Certificate was wrongly inscribed, written as ROTHALL. Henry (according to family hearsay) decided to continue with the spelling of Rothall (or did he have an upset with his father, who was also in Australia at the same time?) Henry's three children were born in South Australia, and I have their details from South Australian birth, marriage and death records. The two girls and parents returned to New Zealand and two more girls were born. They all went to the Manganui/Monganui School (from school records). Their son Henry was born and died in Australia. Henrietta (dau) married Richard Maney, and it was this line that I was researching, thus making the Wrathall/Rothall connection. I have almost completed the current 4 generations, using New Zealand birth, marriage and death records, Family papers etc.
In April 2007, further sources for information on Henry were available at the New Zealand Genealogy Forum.

Stephen Wrathall of Geelong (1859 - 1940)

The following reference is given in Victoria Postal Archives website:

1890/91
Geelong & Western District directory, 1890 - 91, containing alphabetical streets and trades directory for Geelong, Geelong West & Newtown & Chilwell: Also alphabetical directory for the town of Warrnambool, Boroughs of Queenscliff, Port Fairy and Koroit, Shires of Bellarine, Barrabool, Bannockburn, Belfast, Corio, Colac, Hampden, Leigh, Meredith, Mortlake, South Barwon, Winchelsea, Warrnambool. (Geelong, Stephen Wrathall & Co., [1890] ). *LT 058.9457 G27W

This refers to the man listed as "8.1. Stephen Wrathall 1859 - 14 Dec 1940" in Elizabeth Janson's webpage: Francis, Lupton, Richard and Thomas Wrathall . Elizabeth's page lists Stephen (1859 - 1940) as the first son of Richard Wrathall and Eliza Ann Nichollias (see the section on Richard above). In December 2000, Hamish Lonsdale of Victoria sent further information regarding Stephen Wrathall of Geelong and Newton:
I have sent the following to Diane Wrathall in New Zealand, who is in e-correspondence with us about possible links. It may be old hat, but again it may be useful to some of the clan.

On the foundation stone of the Geelong Town Hall, there is mention of a Wrathall. I followed it up with the Geelong Historical Records Society, and they pointed me at the local daily newspaper (which is the oldest in Australia). Stephen is no direct relation to our line that I know of, but he must fit in somewhere.

ORDER OF THE SECRET MONITOR. The members of the above Order are requested to attend the funeral of their late esteemed Past Supreme Ruler R. W. Bro. S. Wrathall...... H. A. Purnell, T.A.G.D.C.

The social comments state:

The death occurred at his home, 47 Virginia Street, Newtown, on Saturday of Mr Stephen Wrathall. He was formally an alderman of Geelong City Council, and for many years was involved in the printing trade in this City. He inaugurated the Geelong Stock and Station Journal. In his younger days he was associated with a number of progressive movements in this city.
In September 2002, Hamish Lonsdale sent information about a memorial to Stephen Wrathall of Geelong:
I thought that you would be interested in this photo of a sign at Indented Head , a small township on the coast of Port Phillip bay in Victoria, Australia. My guess is that is a memorial to Stephen Wrathall who was a local politician in Geelong, died in 1942?. Before we consolidated our local government areas into more logical and larger cost-effective chunks, this sign would have been in the Shire of Bellarine, and Stephen would have had no interest in the location... I will have to find out why! The picture looks East across the bay, and shows a public recreation area. Out of the picture and to the left, there is the wreck of the 'Ozone', a paddle steamer from the late 1800's which burnt to the waterline in suspicious circumstances. You can still swim out and climb over the boilers, shafts and paddle wheels.
In Mar. 2005, Elaine A. Game of Tasmania , who can be reached at regame(at)ozemail(dot)com(dot)au, sent information about Stephen Wrathall of Geelong (1859 - 1940):
I came across a website called Indented Head - 1920: Memories of Lynette (née) Lewis ... It is a 12-page document; what is interesting is that there is quite a lot written about her memories of a Steve Wrathall, who was responsible for the forming of the Batman Park Foreshore Committee, among other things. It mentions that he had a daughter called Ethel, married to a building contractor called Taylor, and that Steve made his money selling water to the Kalgoorlie miners, so he obviously was in W.A. This may help with those researching this Stephen Wrathall. The Memories make for good reading anyway.
In Nov. 2012, Pam Jennings [pje23513(at)bigpond(dot)net(dot)au] had the following query:
I am hoping you can please put me in touch with any descendant of Stephen WRATHALL who died at Geelong in 1940.

I am assisting the Heritage Advisor at the City of Greater Geelong to compile a history of the Indented Head Boat Sheds. Stephen Wrathall was President of the Batman Park Committee of Management and has a reserve named after his at Indented Head.

We would like to compile a biography of each of the original committee members and I would be delighted to contact someone who may have known Stephen better than us!

Stephen Lupton Wrathall of Victoria (1884 - 1957)

Cheryl Torpey , who can be reached at torpey(at)apollo(dot)ruralnet(dot)net(dot)au, is researching her connection to Australian Wrathalls in Victoria:
I am tracking the Torpey family tree and we have some Wrathall information which may be useful...and some which we are seeking. Steven Wrathall married Maggie (Molly) Torpey (19.2.1886 died in 1970s-80s). They both lived in the Mallee town of Woomelang for some years where they raised four children: Alice who married Mr Douglas, Steven who married Molly Akers of Dunolly, Jim who married Elsie Nichols of Avoca (and currently resides in Point Lonsdale, and Molly who married JC Williams.

I have made contact with Elsie Wrathall and have limited additional information on the next generation of Molly Williams and Jim Wrathall...but I am missing the others. I know that Steven and Molly moved from Woomelang to Warranambool and the children would have done their schooling there.... So you see...the Victorian Wrathall connection unfolds...although some have moved to Queensland too. But the situation is complicated by the presence of Wrathalls from New Zealand in Victoria, who are descended from cousins of our Steven.
The FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service has some data regarding Stephen Lupton Wrathall of Victoria, including an IGI Individual Record which lists his parents as William Henry Wrathall and Mary Ann Lovell. The IGI Individual Record for William Henry Wrathall (1859? - 1919) lists his parents as Lupton Wrathall and Mary Pratt (see the section on Lupton above, and see also Lupton Wrathall of Victoria and Descendants). In addition, Elizabeth Janson's webpage Francis, Lupton, Richard and Thomas Wrathall has information on Stephen Lupton Wrathall's family.

In Sep. 2009, Bealiba Cemetery: Data compiled by Carmel M Reynen had a photo of a monument for Mary Ann and William Henry Wrathall which reads as follows:
In loving memory of
Mother: Mary Ann Wrathall, who died at Bealiba, Aug 13th 1938, aged 77 years
She lived for others
Father: William Henry, who died at Dunolly, April 10th, 1919, aged 61 years
The above two pages were inactive in Feb. 2010.

William Henry's entry in the BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA 1914/1920 lists his parents as HY WRATHALL and MARY PRATT. Mary Ann Wrathall's entry in the Victoria (Australia) Deaths register, 1921/1984 lists her parents as Wm Lovel Wrathall and Mary Ann Ruth Maize, but she is listed in BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA 1837/1888 as Mary Ann LOVEL.

Anne R. Wrathall (1885? - 1910?)

In Jan. 2001, Vincent T. Staggard of Hobart , who can be reached at vinsta(at)pop(dot)netspace(dot)net(dot)au, mentioned the following regarding his Wrathall ancestor, who may have been a member of either the Australian or New Zealand branches:
I have an Anne R. Wrathall in my Staggard family tree; I am not sure who I should talk to for further info, so you are my first port of call. She married Hubert Edward (Bert) Staggard (born 1883), date of marriage circa 1909. The Staggards emigrated from England to Tasmania as Bounty Immigrants via the "Whirlwind" in 1855. Two sites concerning this emigration are: Anne R. Wrathall either died or divorced after the first child, Ethel, who was born in New Zealand 28 April 1910. Hubert had a second wife and they had 3 children.
We haven't yet located Anne R., who was probably born around 1885 in New Zealand. Further data is available at this website: Descendants of Thomas Staggard . See also Hamish Lonsdale-Wrathall's extraction of BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA 1902/1913 . In Nov. 2006, Vincent updated his information:
Herbert Edward Staggard, born 1886; married Annie Bradford Wrathall in 1909
From BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA 1889/1901 :
Annie Wrathall, b. 1889; parents: Wm. Wrathall and MARY ANN LOVEL
