[Here is an history of] my branch of the Wrathall family .... It starts in West Yorkshire, moves to a part of Lancashire which is now classed as Cumbria and then moves to Lancashire. I was born and still live in Lancashire.I corrected the error in my transcription of the parish records to show William (b. 1769) as the father of the children previously attributed to Geraldine's William (b. 1753). Geraldine's research indicates that her ancestor Grace Wrathall is the daughter of the same William Wrathall listed in Roy and Derek Wrathall's family tree who was the first son of Thomas Wrathall (b. 1729). Geraldine continues her family history as follows:
I was recently looking through the Linton Parish records and came across William Wrathall (1753 -1820) in generation 9. This particular William Wrathall married Anne Robinson and gave birth to the following children (date of baptism in brackets): Mary (1779), Grace and Ann (1784), James (1787), John (1788), Mary (1790), William (1791), Stephen (1793), Isabel (1797). All this information is on the IGI. I also found Grace and Ann's baptisms in the Thornton Parish Records in Lancaster library. My 3 times great grandfather, William (1805), was the illegitimate son of Grace Wrathall. At the moment I am assuming Grace is the daughter of William and Anne.
Anthony, Bailey, and William [from the Linton parish records] were the sons of William Wrathall (b. 1769) and Jane Bailey. Again this information is taken from the IGI.
Grace Wrathall (spinster) of Gatehouse had an illegitimate son, William, born in Westhouse and baptised at Thornton in Lonsdale Parish Church on 22nd November 1805. There were 2 Grace Wrathalls in Westhouse at that time who could have given birth to William.
William Wrathall married Betty, who was born about 1808 in Preston Patrick. They had at least five children - James (b. 1838), William (b. 1841), Ann (b. 1844), John (b. 1846-7) & Edmond Langstreth (b. 1850-1). This family is shown living in Westhouse on the 1851 census.
James Wrathall married Jane Shaw of Barrow on 11.11.1863 at Dalton-in-Furness Parish Church. Their first child was William born 14.6.1865 at Warton nr. Carnforth. Their second child, my great grandmother, was Agnes Grace born 6.11.1868 at Plum Green, Colton (registration district was Ulverston). A third child, Elizabeth Ann was born approx. May1871. I think the family were living in Barrow at this time as Jane Wrathall died in Barrow on 21.8.1871 and baby Elizabeth Ann died two weeks later at Flookburgh, Holker Lower, probably at the home of Jane's family. James remarried in 1874, Betsy (Elizabeth) from Aysgarth.
On the 1881 census James, Betsy, William jnr, Agnes Grace and William snr. are living on a farm in Priesten Lane, Grane, Haslingden, Lancashire. This is where Agnes Grace had an illegitimate daughter, Jane Elizabeth, on 20.8.1887. Jane Elizabeth married Thomas Kaine in 1904 and had 12 children, one of whom was my father, Tom Kaine. My Grandmother Jane's birth was registered by Elizabeth Wrathall so at the moment I am presuming that Agnes (above) is my Great-grandmother and Betsey, my Great great-grandmother.
Agnes Grace Wrathall went on to marry John Ramsbottom on 17.8.1889. I have recently discovered that they had at least 4 children who were sent as as "Home Children" to Canada & Australia. Just this week I have had an e-mail from one of Agnes Grace's great grand-daughters in America who is now researching her side of the Wrathall family. I have recommended the Wrathall Genealogy web site to her as it has been invaluable to me in my research particularly the St. Catherine's Index pages and the 1851 Census pages. Roy Wrathall's ancestry page has also been of great help.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the contributors to the Wrathall web sites for making them so interesting and helpful.
Edmund Langstreth Wrathall married my great-great-grandmother Margaret BUTTERFIELD in approx. 1872. They had a daughter Margaret Amy b. 27/7/1876 in Settle, Yks. ... Edmund was the step-father of my great-grandmother Mary Ann Butterfield, living with Edmund at Lanshaw, Tatham, Lancashire, as noted in the 1881 Tatham census [see above].We have one record in the St. Catherine's House Index of Margaret Wrathall, d. 1881, Lunesdale district (aged 45). This was a record for Edmund Wrathall's spouse Margaret, and the age at death indicates a birth year of 1836, meaning she would have been 26 when her first daughter was born. Tatham was probably in the Lunesdale district at the time. Belinda's information continues as follows:
My gg grandmother Margaret was unmarried when her eldest daughters Sarah (b. 1862 Fleetwood, Lanc) and Mary Ann (b. 1866 Preston, Lanc) were born. I'm not sure who their father (s?) was, but perhaps one day I'll find out. Incidently, Edmund remarried in 1882 after Margaret's death. I have his marriage certificates, and also the birth and marriage certificates of his daughter Margaret Amy.
Edmund Wrathall married Margaret Butterfield on 11 Dec 1873 in the parish church of Tatham, Lanc. Edmund was a farmer of Middle Balshah (?), Tatham; Margaret was of Lanshaw, Tatham. Edmund's father was a farmer, William Wrathall.
The entry [in the St.C.H.I.] is for "our" Margaret. I have her death certificate. She died 13/03/1881 at 'Lanshaw' in Tatham (Reg. district Lunesdale) of heart disease.
Edmund Wrathall married Isabella Capstick on 22 Aug 1882. Edmund was a farmer of "Lanshaw" in Tatham. Isabella was from Bentham. Her father was Thomas Capstick, farmer. I'm not sure if there were any children from this marriage. Edmund's daughter from his first marriage, Margaret Amy, married William Henry Wignall 27 Oct 1902. Both bride and groom were 26 years old at the time. Margaret Amy's residence was Christ Church, Lancaster. Her father was Edmund Wrathall, Farmer. Henry was a shopman of Thornton-in-Lonsdale (they certainly didn't travel far). His father was John, Inn keeper.
I had a few hours in the reference library in Lancaster last week and am attaching extracts from newspaper items in which John James Wrathall figures and also the obituary for his father, Thomas Wrathall. As you will see, Thomas was something of a local hero. I found a report of the inquest on the three people who died in the flood in 1927 and have put the relevant extract with the obituary.
The explosion at White Lund is the one referred to by Ted Wrathall and it is also mentioned in the Burton School log books . My father told me about it many years ago and at the time many people thought that the German zeppelins were dropping bombs. The explosion was heard over 20 miles away.
I have recently started on tracing my husband's ancestors. I have found Roy's website, and Frank has spoken to Derek. My husband Frank (Francis Anthony) descends from John Wrathall and Anne Pickersgill of Linton . Frank's great-great-grandfather was Isaac (b.9 Jan 1837), great-grandfather John (b. 18 Sept 1863), grandfather Francis (b. 1887) and father Francis Haworth (b. 30 Sept 1924). We are dairy farmers and Frank is also a cattle dealer (although difficult in the present climate). It's a nice thought that his ancestors did the same job!! We have three boys, Frederick John (b. 8 Aug 1997), Isaac Francis (b. 28 Sept 1998) and Levi William (b. 26 Aug 2000) - yes three in three years!Trudi's information can be viewed at this link: Francis Anthony Wrathall's Family , including new photos and data regarding Frank's great-grandfather John Wrathall, which Trudi sent in April 2002. Trudi has been researching John's 3 marriages, and sent transcriptions of marriage certificates in September 2002. (last updated Jan. 19, 2003)
I have various names, dates and places which I am constantly updating, but the information on my husband's direct branch is fairly extensive. Anyone needing this information, please email me at fandt(dot)wrathall(at)tesco(dot)net. Any information about James (b.14 Jul 1861), Frank (b.10 Aug 1865), Isaac (b.19 Oct 1869) would be gratefully received. In fact, any information about this branch would help.
As I start the quest to trace my family tree, I stumbled upon your various sites. I am indeed a proud Wrathall living in Lancashire, and would be very interested in tracing my roots and learning about my family history.Click HERE to read further data on Paul Wrathall's family, who lived in Nelson in the late 19th century.
If you have any information or advice as I begin my quest, or require any info for your own research, please contact me.
